In an old television commercial a woman’s voice (voiced over an on-screen-gal in full-beach frolic) claims she “wasn’t going to let genital herpes get her down.”

As taking a pill once a week, not every day–the upgrade this commercial ballyhooed–can reduce you (or someone like you) to the deliria of horse riding, wave diving, and hand holding enacted by the figures shown on the screen, might you not also forgo belief in the metaphor of direction?

To make too much of a thing is an ad’s purpose, raise the high, reduce the low.

Now, take your pill, think about “down there” a bit less often and get back to getting it on, or down or even dirty with the generic model dude riding the horse next to you.

In the world of advertising, to get on top of one thing means you are top of it all, smiling like an idiot.

But still, cysts on your genitals are a downer, no?
